In order to be an upholsterer, one needs to have a wide variety of skills. Obviously, the ability to operate a sewing machine and stay on the lines, but also sheet metal skills, painting, woodworking, and design. I’m not sure if I have any of those skills mastered, but I have can cobble stuff up, cover it with leather, and damn, it looks pretty good!
I cut out the kick panels from aluminum yesterday, and got them covered today. I also pulled the wires for the dome light at the back of the cab, and got that wired up. It works fine, but I can’t seem to get it to work independently of the under dash lights. Oh well.
Before I could cover any of the new panels, I made a trip to “Home Depot”, and bought an outdoor carpet “throw” in loop pile, a dark tobacco color that’ll contrast nicely with the taupe seats and trim panels. I also bought two cans of Loc-Tite spray adhesive. That stuff is the BOMB! It’s cheap, it tacks up quickly, sprays evenly, and stuff stays stuck!
So, mark down several more things in the “Done” column! The windlace is in. All the trim panels are done. The back window is in. I bought some 6×9 Pioneer speakers for the stereo, and have to cut holes in the door trim panels to mount them. Those will get leather trim, with holes punched in the leather, the speakers will be flush mounted behind the upholstery.
I’ve got to finish the windshield header panel and get it primed and painted body color, which is about the last big thing on the list of things I can do here at the shop. Other than that, exhaust and front end alignment, and we’re ready to roll!
