It may be big, but it sure is ugly! Actually, I kinda, OK, I REALLY like the ’62 Del-Ray we bought from fellow TCT member Brandon. He was kind enough to deliver it for fuel money this morning, and I was happily surprised to see the camper looks better in person than the pictures he had of it.
While it’s not the “Sky-Lounger” model, it’s still pretty tall, as the picture shows. The front overhang has the cool panoramic windows, similar to our Spartans, which is what I like about it. And, it’s pretty “Over the Top” in a funky, early ’60’s way.
It’s what Don Draper would go camping in, if Don Draper camped, and there were an ample supply of Crown Royal.
We tucked in my Dad’s shop, setting on 55 gallon drums and the three jacks, until I can make some jack extensions that’ll allow me to get the GMC dually under it, then, we’re going camping somewhere! The interior is all birch in very nice shape, the original dinette cushions are intact and useable, although the mattress in the bunk needs replaced.
In other news, the Diamond T is all gassed up, bikes in the back, and ready to roll to Milford, Spartan in tow. I polished some of the paint on the truck yesterday where I’d hung a curtain in the clear, and the back of the cab where the clear was orange peel-y. It looks better.
The bikes fit the mounts very well, and the spare tire (fits truck and trailer) lays on the bed floor under them. Plenty of room.
I filled the cab’s hide-em strip at the roof with some taupe vinyl which matches the interior this morning. I had gotten used to seeing the open seam, with screw heads showing, and sort looked past it, but it looks MUCH better now. I can’t think of anything else I have time to do except pack my bag, and we’re off!
I will be ready for a G & T when we get to Milford, the official TCT beverage!

I can’t believe how big your truck camper looks on the inside! Nice!
Oh, I love that ols truck camper. It is very vintage, and looks very good on the inside. That is a real Jewel.
How many campers do one person need? 🙂
Well, technically there are two of us, so that’s only two for each of us. And, we have four tow vehicles, so that’s only one each, which seems reasonable…
That is you guys, love it.!!!!! Still trying to find home for Wagemaker in Battle Creek. http://www.burnpilerestorations.weebly.com (look under Bee Line)

It is as cool in person as the pictures show it to be— cooolll. Beautiful combo.
Good find Brian! Hey listen – I have an opportunity to get a 40′ Imperial mansion in REAL GOOD condition for 3k. Problem for ME is that it is in Chico Ca and I am in Ocean Park, Wa. (98640) not far from Astoria Oregon. I am considering going for it with my 98 Isuzu Rodeo 4X4 ex-4door art car/truck. I know there are some KILLER passes on I-5 just before the Ca border then again going North out of Grants Pass. Trying to figure if I can turn a profit after investing 4k into it….research to see if this tough little G-M corporate dual overhead cam V-6 has the snoose for the job…
Love the camper!!
Joe Chasse’
Joe, DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!! That’s 40 feet, and roughly 4 tons of trailer, NOT CAMPER you’re talking about, and your Isuzu, while a capable little car, is a LITTLE CAR. Hire a transporter, or rent, beg, borrow or steal a 1 ton (ONE TON) truck to tow it home. You’re considering putting yourself, and everyone on the highway near you in mortal peril. You have no idea the folly of what you’re considering doing. I’m brave, but not stupid, and I wouldn’t, even for a moment, consider moving a trailer that size farther than round the yard with your car. Bad idea.
Love seeing the Del Rey Survivor! My dad built those in the 60’s and is being inducted into the RV/MH Hall of Fame in August 2016. I am looking for a couple of campers for a show-n-tell since nobody in the business today has seen them! Check out the new Facebook group I started “Del Rey Tour Club” as I will be adding information and pictures. I might also have a brochure for you after we see what they want at the museum. BTW, your model is a “Sonora” I think. I can email you a PDF of the brochure and other stuff once I get it scanned. Send me a PM on the FB Group Page.
