Wow.  It’s October 3rd already.  Where did the summer go?  What happened, and why didn’t I get all the things done I thought would be childs play back in April?

To review, as shown above, I got the roadster (sort of) finished, and drove it.  A LOT.  And fixed it a little, but mostly, drove it.

We went camping.  A LOT,  8 weeks all told, including a great 2 week trip in northern Michigan the past couple of weeks.  It was great to be away.

We explored lots of new (to us) wineries, brewpubs and distilleries.  Here we are, with Kim’s sister Julie and her husband Ken, at “Glass Creek” Wines in Hastings, right in our backyard.  GREAT Michigan red wines, a nice surprise!

We went to a couple of cool car shows.  Here at Gilmore Car Museum at the “Relix Riot”, being chauffeured by my grandson Milo.  Time well spent.

Spent more quality time with Milo, still at Relix Riot, here with his dad’s wagon.  They surprised us by showing up!

Oh, I did get the wagon painted, and a new exhaust system after it blew out one of the original 10 year old mufflers on the way to Port Crescent.  For more camping.

Changed the wheels and tires on the ’34, and managed to keep them from falling off.  Which puts a kink in a romantic evening cruise…

Went to world premier movies and skyped with Hollywood elite.  Originally from Flint.  As part of the crowd, but, hey, it counts.

Bought lift tickets and rolled down a ski hill on a wheeled cart.  Doing that again!

Saw beautiful sunsets and mastered the art of being in two places at once.  That’s me, left, and right.

Got marooned on a deserted island with our best friends, and was rescued in time to go to a dance.

Did manage to (almost) get the T’bird painted.  I did get it blocked, primed, and blocked again, now, one more coat, more sanding, then I think it’s possible I can get at least the dash and door jambs painted.  Or not, doesn’t really matter.

So, that’s where summer goes.  It seems like it’ll never get here in February, but before you know it, it’s October, and winter is closing in again.  The seasons fly, but they’re full of fun, family, and friends, and that’s the most important part of the whole year.

Stay tuned, there’s more to come, it’s early, and it’ll be summer again before we know it!

Busy couple of weeks here, getting the winters dust off the Spartan, rebuilding the Diamond T’s brakes, and incidental aggravating things like a new battery in the wagon and a shorted fuel management module in the lawn mower.

So, the work is done, we’re waiting for the weekend with our Tin Can Tourists friends!

So far, we can’t complain.

This last weekend was the second outing for the Spartan, and again it exceeds our expectations.  We went to Yankee Springs State Park just 15 miles from us for their “Harvest Festival”, were joined by our grandson Milo, and had a wonderful time.  Next week, we hit the road to Northern Michigan for a color tour and fall vacation.  We’re looking forward to it, and to many more trips and family vacations.

Here’s a few photos of last weekends fun:

The weekend with the Spartan was a huge success.  Lots of compliments on the trailer, especially the two-tone exterior polish.  Everybody liked it, we love it, so it’s permanent.  I’m going to Scotch bright the roof and rear panel for a satin look to contrast the polished sides.

One year of blood, sweat, and a few tears is being rewarded with what is turning out to be a FABULOUS weekend in Milford at the Tin Can Tourists fall rally.  I’m reminded again that without our great friends, none of this would be possible.  Many thanks to Mike and Cheryl O’Conner, Mike and Cortney Greene, Butch and Pam Starner, Jake and Tami Moomey , Kirk and Donnell Brown for assistance, and all our TCT friends for support and encouragement.  Kim and I couldn’t have gotten so much done so fast without you.
Without further ado, behold, the ’47 Spartan Manor:

I’ve gotten lots done the last couple days.  All the Spartan’s window garnish trims are polished and installed, accent lights on the display shelves in, bulkhead cabinet lights over the bed are installed.  The dump valves are on the black and grey tanks are on and I replaced the leaking seal in the Dometic “Sea/Land” toilet.  Not very glamorous but needed.

The new Zip-Dee awning should be done this week, the screen doors need to be built and I have get the new center front window in.  The upholsterer needs to get busy, my work is almost done!

Took the fridge door off the Spartan today and painted it.  Looks great, cheap enamel with catalyst, laid down like glass.  Tomorrow I can put it back together.  One more thing done.

IMG_9435Finally, I got varnish on the interior of the Spartan!  Two coats on the forward 1/3rd, and one coat everywhere else.  The cabinet doors, drawers, and all the other little parts also have two coats.  I got two coats on the part of the interior, shown above, because I put the second coat on while the first coat was still a bit “tacky”.  You can see the break at the piece of trim over the counter top.  Everything beyond that is just one coat, and is visibly duller than the forward panels.  Now, sand everything with 220, then another two coats, and I can start putting this thing back together.

We’re ordering the foam for the cushions, and Marmoleum for the countertops this week, once the varnish is done Kim will make the cushions (we have the material for them and the curtains) and I can finish up the hundreds of unfinished chores yet to be done, and hopefully it’ll be so we can use it this summer.

Following are more photos of the interior, the first are of the paneling just stained, a mix of Golden Pecan Minwax oil stain, and a bit of yellow paint, and then with varnish on.

There’s light at the end of the tunnel!

I’ve got to be better at updating this page!  My excuse is that since there was no way I was going to get it done for the TCT Spring Rally three weeks ago, that I might as well relax.  And, my grandson came over, and we went camping twice, and the lawn needed to be mowed, and, and, ad infinitum.   Anyway, after a month long hiatus on getting much done on the trailer, today I finally got stain on the cabinet doors and kitchen drawers.

I used Minwax oil stain, Golden Pecan to try to get close to the original finish on the wardrobe doors I salvaged from another old Spartan.  It’s very close, the wildly different grain pattern and colors of the various sheets of 3/4″, 1/4″ and 1/8″ all seems to blend together pretty well once stained.  I touched a couple places on those original doors where I sanded through the varnish to bare wood, the stain is an identical match color wise on those panels.  A little more brown on some of the other new panels, but it’ll look pretty uniform once the poly is laid down.
